Burnside Bridge Replacement

The Burnside Bridge is a critical artery, linking the heart of downtown Portland with the heart of the Eastside. The historic bridge would likely not survive a large earthquake, so Multnomah County is planning to tear down the current bridge and build a new bridge in its place.

The project would begin in 2026 and take 5 years to complete. It’s a long timeline, but the new bridge would be built to withstand a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake—there’s a 37% chance that an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 or greater will hit our region in the next 50 years, and the new Burnside Bridge would allow vehicular traffic to continue in the aftermath of such an event.

Multnomah County has narrowed the new bridge’s design to 6 possibilities, and they want residents’ input on which design to choose. There’s a survey, open until July 31st, where you can review the options and cast your vote. Visit the project webpage and voice your opinion.
