Montgomery Park Area Plan

Northwest Portland is known for its beautiful homes, amazing array of restaurants and shopping, and the streetcar rolling through the heart of the neighborhood. But the area north of NW Vaughn Street has historically been taken up by industrial uses, and much of that activity has left the area.

The city of Portland recently unveiled their Montgomery Park Area Plan, which would bring big changes to the area.

The plan mainly involves transportation and land use. It would create a 1.3 mile extension of the streetcar, which would run an east-west loop through the neighborhood. They would also extend multiple streets that are currently not thoroughfares, creating a stronger grid of cross-streets with smaller blocks.

On the land use side, they would rezone much of the industrial property, creating mixed-use zones where property owners would be encouraged to build housing and retail. There would also be new green space created and more trees planted throughout.

The streetcar has been a catalyst for development throughout the city, and the goal is to create a neighborhood full of housing and commercial activity that can easily utilize public transportation.
