Development Spotlight : Lloyd Center Baseball

Lloyd Center opened in Northeast Portland in 1960 and is the oldest mall in the city. Its iconic ice rink is the centerpiece of what’s been a huge part of the community for many years.

The mall has changed hands several times and suffered from the decline of in-person shopping. Recent efforts to fill the mall with indie stores have breathed some life into it, but it’s still nowhere near full.

There’s a new proposal to sell the mall to a group looking to bring a major league baseball team to Portland. The group would like to build a baseball stadium plus multiple residential towers on the existing mall’s site. A stadium like Wrigley Field would easily fit on the site, and would take advantage of all of the nearby transit.

Mayor Wheeler has indicated some support for the plan, seeing it as a way to revitalize the area. Will we be singing “take me out to the ballgame”? An answer may come in the next few months, so stay tuned.
